TKCA Architects win Grand Prix title at the 2024 Creative Colour Awards (CCA)

Malaysia's very own TKCA Architects clinches both the Grand Prix and the Best in Corporate and Commercial Exterior - Architectural at the Creative Colour Awards, a double triumph that underscores the studio's international design standing

Having previously won Gold at a regional level for the 2015 AYDA Awards, Ar IDr Ts Rien Tan, founder of TKCA Architects, and his dynamic team celebrates a remarkable victory at the Creative Colour Awards (CCA) 2024. The multidisciplinary studio achieves the global champion Grand Prix win and also secured the Best in Corporate and Commercial Exterior in the Architectural category for its innovative use of color in design.

SAMA Square Market – Best in Commercial and Corporate Exterior

TKCA Architects’ gold-winning submission, the SAMA Square Market, reimagines a multifunctional urban space in Kuala Lumpur by integrating three key zones: the Main Market Building, the Open Street People Plaza and the Retail Village. The design optimizes the ground plane to create layered public plazas, markets and retail spaces that promote sustainable community interactions.

Emphasising the area’s abundant natural light, the translucent facades ensure a bright and accessible environment. Ar. Rien also highlights how colour is crucial to the design, with intentional use of various hues delineating the square’s different zones and infusing the space with a vibrant character. The bright colours enhance the open space concept, while contrasting tones in the plazas and retail areas accentuate specific features and amenities and foster a dynamic atmosphere.

Skyblox Co-Living Housing - Best Residential Exterior in the Architectural Category

The SkyBlox co-living project, a modern landmark in Kuala Lumpur with its striking yellow cantilever units, is comprised of 320 ensuite rooms with bespoke interiors. A development housing over 500 residents, SkyBlox utilizes Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) for all rooms.

Yellow is used as a main decorative accent, creating focal points against the light and dark grey overall colour palette. The design features open corridors with cross ventilation for optimal air quality, and a translucent panel roof that allows natural daylight to create a vitalising play of light, and consequently shadow, as the day develops.

This year, the Creative Colour Awards (CCA) attracted 157 submissions from 11 countries and regions, including India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and the Middle East. The entries showcased a rich array of cultural influences in the use of colour in architecture and design.

The awards cover categories such as commercial, corporate, residential and public spaces, celebrating designers who harness the transformative power of colour to benefit its user communities. Through the CCA, Nippon Paint recognises emerging talents and connects them with industry leaders to drive growth and innovation.
