Asia-Pacific Space Designers Association

Asia Luxury Living Design Summit (2nd Edition) Successfully Concludes with a Focus on Design-Driven Innovation and a Sustainable Future

Jointly organised by the Asia-Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA) and the Asia-Pacific Design Centre (APDC), co-hosted by the Foshan Environmental Design Association (FEDA), Foshan China Ceramics City Group Co., Ltd., and PABLO NOW, the 2nd Edition of the Asia Luxury Living Design Summit brought together leading designers, brand representatives and industry stakeholders to explore the future of luxury living in Asia.

As one of the main organisers, APSDA remains committed to fostering professional exchange and regional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific design industry. The second edition of the summit, themed “Asian Lifestyle Aesthetics in the Era of Sustainable Development”, honed in on strengthening cross-border cooperation and promoting cultural exchange.

In his opening address, Mr Zhou Jun, Co-Chairman and President of Foshan China Ceramics City Group Co., Ltd., highlighted Foshan’s strategic role as a global hub for the ceramics and design industry. He reaffirmed the company’s ongoing commitment to providing an international platform for dialogue between designers and industry stakeholders.

Prof. Keat Ong, President of APSDA, extended a sincere invitation for more designers across the Asia-Pacific region to join APSDA’s growing professional network. He emphasised that today’s designers are not only creators of spaces but also active advocates for social sustainability.

Mr Xie Zhi Ming, Vice President of the Architectural Society of China – Institute of Interior Design (IID-ASC) and President of the Foshan Environmental Design Association (FEDA), called on Chinese designers to integrate the strengths of “Made in China” with “Designed in China”, and to actively expand into international markets and enhance global brand presence.

Speaking on behalf of the co-organising partners, Mr Steven, owner of the PABLO NOW brand, shared his vision for future collaborations. “Looking ahead, we hope to engage in deeper partnerships with outstanding designers and artists, fully showcasing the scale and potential of Chinese design and Chinese brands,” he said. Mr Steven also emphasised that the summit serves not only as a platform for idea exchange but also as fertile ground for creative inspiration. Through ongoing cross-sector dialogue, PABLO NOW aims to encourage more designers to pursue original research and development by bringing outstanding Chinese design to the international stage.

Following that, Ms Lin Chih-Feng, Executive Creative Director of HODDI Design and Council Member of CSID, delivered a keynote presentation titled, “Under Soft Light: Reconstructing Contemporary Expressions of Oriental Luxury”. She shared a series of lifestyle-inspired and emotionally driven spatial design projects, vividly illustrating that high-quality living goes beyond the layering of materials and visual aesthetics. It is about the integration of light, emotion and the overall living experience.

Prof. Keat Ong continued with an insightful presentation, sharing key concepts from his book “Injected Architecture”, introducing a unique methodology that integrates architectural thinking into interior design. He encouraged designers to adopt a more systematic and inquisitive approach when creating spatial environments.

During the forum dialogue session, five distinguished guests from different sectors engaged in an in-depth discussion on a wide range of topics, including product selection, sources of inspiration, market expansion, cultural integration and cross-industry innovation. Each speaker shared their professional experience and forward-looking perspectives.

Mr Xie Zhiming shared how his recent trip to Canada offered new perspectives on how architecture and interior spaces respond to extreme climate conditions. He shared how cross-regional life observations are invaluable for designers seeking to broaden their thinking and drive technical innovation.

When discussing how to balance design style, client needs and brand positioning, the panelists unanimously agreed that authentic life experiences should remain as a foundation for design inspiration while also making full use of the diverse perspectives gained through travel and cultural exchange.

Prof. Keat Ong further pointed out that Chinese brands are no longer limited to product exports but are gradually moving towards global lifestyle and brand image exportation. He encouraged designers to develop a deeper understanding of the characteristics of regional markets, local needs and competitiveness in the international arena.

On the topic of blending local culture with international vision, the speakers agreed that the true value of design lies in its modern interpretation of regional culture. Furthermore, cross-sector collaborations between designers and brands are increasingly becoming a key driver for brand value enhancement.

The entire dialogue was marked by diverse perspectives and lively exchanges, fully embodying the summit’s core theme: “Design empowers lifestyles, and innovation drives industry transformation”. It offered the audience a wealth of insights and inspiration.

The successful conclusion of the Asia Luxury Living Design Summit (2nd Edition) once again underscored the Asia-Pacific design community’s collective responsibility and vision in driving lifestyle transformation and sustainability.

APSDA will continue to champion regional cooperation and cross-cultural dialogue. We look forward to empowering more Asia-Pacific designers and industry partners to elevate Asian design onto the global stage.

We warmly welcome designers and stakeholders across the region to join APSDA and work together towards shaping the future of Asian sustainable design.

READING MI by PANORAMA DESIGN GROUP, China

“Reading Mi” is a cultural concept bookstore founded by the “Yoyi Book” brand in 2014. Every store integrates reading, cultural creations, coffee, parent-child, social activities and other diversified formats together. The business positioning of “family / middle class” aims to provide a new cultural space for urban families. Concept Located in the open atrium space of a shopping mall in Foshan, China, this bookstore faced the challenge of an on-site space to create a haven of calm amidst the hustle and bustle. The brand name ‘覔’ is an ancient font, which means to explore and seek.

In Chinese culture, the concept of ‘hidden’ is endowed with the philosophical connotation of wisdom and life. Where there is a blank and invisible place, it often shows the most sincere existence and hides the deepest peace, which becomes the design concept of this project.

The design team pushed to create an introverted, holistic environment. Under the warm background tones, different spatial functions are defined by a series of abstract book-flipping gestures. Design Entrance Hall The entrance hall is like a “hall of knowledge”, with a roof made of wooden slats, hanging high in the sky like an open book in the shape of a herringbone. This double-height space serves as a starting point for customers to purify their minds and is particularly conducive to contemplation, while those on the upper floors can also glimpse the endless books and treasures below.

SLEEK SPLENDOUR by BOX DESIGN STUDIO, Malaysia

The concept of “SleekLuxe” in our design is defined as sleek, with bold accent colours, integrating clean yet soft forms as well as using neutral tones and finishing. We were honoured to design a unit in a condominium called Mont Kiara 28 resided by a lovely newlywed couple where they had the idea of a neat, elegant, modern and organized home with simplicity in mind.

There were challenges faced during the design process which includes the clients’ requirement of having a systematized and well-kempt living environment which required plenty of storage spaces. With that, we came up with a proper space planning using organizer system that included proper storages that addressed the clients’ concerns and requirements.

On the whole, every requirement was fulfilled along with embracing the modern, luxurious, sleek concept and deliberately considered materials, fittings, finishes in order to reflect the user’s personal needs and improve their experience and quality of life.

APSDA Awards Gala Dinner 2023 would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, whose commitment to excellence mirrors our own. We would like to extend our gratitude to our Gold Sponsors, Genteel Home and Jiangsu Pivot New Decorative Materials Co., Ltd. Their support was instrumental in making this evening truly remarkable.
We also extend our appreciation to our Bespoke Interior Builder Sponsor, Armarior; Luxx NewHouse, our Official Trophy Sponsor for the category Personality of the Year. We would also like to acknowledge our Supporting Sponsors, Phillip Jeffries, and Aoyama Design Forum. These sponsors’ contributions added an extra layer of prestige to this grand event.
Professor Keat Ong’s opening remarks emphasized APSDA’s standing as the premier platform for recognizing outstanding achievements in the Asia-Pacific Region. He underscored the significance of this platform by expressing his gratitude to the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID) for hosting the Awards launch in Manila this past April, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in bringing this prestigious event to fruition
Moreover, Professor Ong acknowledged the essential role played by the distinguished jury members who dedicated their time and expertise to carefully evaluate the submissions. Their collective wisdom and experience, drawn from different countries, played a crucial part in upholding the high standards of these awards.
To convey the significance of good design, Professor Ong borrowed the quote from Dr. Ralf Speth, “If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad designs.” This statement emphasizes the long-term value and impact of well-executed design, which can ultimately save time and resources in contrast to subpar alternatives.
In closing, the APSDA Awards Gala Dinner 2023 was an extraordinary celebration of design excellence. We extend our gratitude to our judges, sponsors, and the entire interior design community for making this event a resounding success. As we move forward, we remain committed to fostering creativity and innovation in the industry. Thank you for being a part of this remarkable evening, and we look forward to continued inspiration and achievements in the world of interior design.

Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program (AP-ID-AP) Elevates Standards in Interior Design Qualification Across the Region

The Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA) is proud to announce its start of its preparation of the Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program, marking a significant milestone in the field of interior design education within the Asia Pacific region.
The official announcement was made with a launch ceremony graced by Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade & Industry, Ms Low Yen Ling, during the FIND Design Asia Fair 2023 exhibition held at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore in the presence of the Board Members of APSDA.
Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade & Industry, Ms Low Yen Ling, stated, “The AP-ID-AP is the first regional accreditation scheme for interior design practitioners in the Asia Pacific region. Together with the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on Interior Design Services, this will facilitate greater mobility of interior design professionals within the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA) and enhance exchange in the area of best practices, standards of interior design education, professional practices and qualifications.”
AP-ID-AP is set to transform the landscape of interior design education by upholding rigorous standards and ensuring quality education for aspiring interior designers with mutual recognition across borders.
AP-ID-AP is a collaborative initiative undertaken by leading interior design associations who are members in APSDA who already have existing accreditation programme in place. With a shared commitment to advancing excellence in interior design education, AP-ID-AP aims to create a comprehensive and standardized framework for accreditation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of interior design programs.
Key objectives of the Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program include:
1. Enhancing Educational Quality: AP-ID-AP will work closely with interior design associations to evaluate and enhance the quality of interior design education. This will involve rigorous assessments of curriculum, faculty qualifications, student outcomes, and facilities.
2. Ensuring Global Competitiveness: Accreditation by AP-ID-AP will provide interior design programs with international recognition and validation, positioning graduates to compete effectively in the global marketplace.
3. Fostering Collaboration: AP-ID-AP will serve as a platform for collaboration between educational institutions, industry professionals, and accreditation bodies, fostering a dynamic and innovative learning environment.
4. Continuous Improvement: Accredited programs will be required to commit to continuous improvement, ensuring that students receive the most up-to-date education in the field of interior design.
The AP-ID-AP accreditation process will be thorough and impartial, involving a comprehensive evaluation by a team of experts in the field. Institutions that meet AP-ID-AP’s stringent standards will be granted accreditation, which will serve as a mark of excellence and quality in interior design education.
Prof. Keat Ong, President of APSDA, stated, “We are excited to initiate the preparation of the Asia Pacific Interior Designers’ Accreditation Program, as it represents a significant step towards ensuring the highest standards in interior design education across the region. We believe that this initiative will not only benefit the Interior Designers but will also contribute to the growth and development of the interior design industry in the Asia Pacific.”
