DOTY 2026 Best Commercial Design (Workplace: Office – Gold): Chaos Design Studio – A Synergy of Light, Material, and Collaboration

Japanese philosophy meets raw industrialism and warm, tactile finishes to birth a community-driven workspace that prioritises shared purpose, connection and productivity.

Considering just how far today’s workplace culture has rapidly evolved, A Synergy of Light, Material, and Collaboration introduces a compelling narrative of balance—between industry and intimacy, structure and fluidity, efficiency and well-being. Guided by the Japan-originated Obeya Seido philosophy which essentially promotes the culture of all employees physically working together instead of doing so alone in isolating cubicles, this design offers a deeply intentional environment that supports both productivity and human connection.

At the core of the project is the idea of “communal efficiency”, a workspace designed to encourage open communication, fluid collaboration and shared purpose. One of the ways in which the designers brought this ethos to life is through an open central core, framed with modular partitions that allow teams to reconfigure spaces as needs evolve. By removing physical and metaphorical barriers, the space promotes flexibility and adaptability without sacrificing an ounce of productivity and comfort.

Another significant strategy is through the choice of materials. The designers opted to honour the source of inspiration by blending raw industrial elements with warm, tactile finishes. Starting at the entrance, the refined craftsmanship of the distinctive stone clay line cut and troweled wall is the first to greet visitors, immediately establishing a tone of professionalism. Sleek metal accents and the sheer elegance of marble tables found throughout the workspace elevate the aesthetic while retaining functional durability. Robust seater stone elements define the integrated communal areas while the pervasive warmth of terracotta tones and veneer wood softens these strong materials, culminating in a sophisticated and functional workspace.

A sculptural staircase stands as the architectural centrepiece that does far more than just connect levels. With its distinct geometry, deep blue hue and careful positioning, it acts as a visual focal point and facilitates the channelling of daylight straight from above, becoming a vertical conduit that enhances brightness throughout the core. Simultaneously, it frames curated views of the exterior greenery, seamlessly linking the interior experience to the natural world beyond. In total, this simple but powerful integration of light and nature transforms the staircase from a structural necessity into an experiential landmark.

Apart from skylights, the effect of natural light and connection to the outdoors is further emphasized through expansive glazing, generating a series of dynamic voids that instantly break visual monotony and inject vitality into the entire building. The constant play of shadow and light adds a touch of quiet drama to the workplace, gently reinforcing its sense of presence and depth. In addition, a dedicated café area further elevates the office’s social warmth. Outfitted with shared tables and integrated lighting to support team lunches and informal interaction, it’s a stark reminder that collaboration often happens outside of meeting rooms.

Rooted in Eastern philosophy but translated through a modern design language that merges the youthful edge of the raw industrial aesthetic with warm and textural finishes, the new office design unquestionably prioritizes teamwork, adaptability, well-being and harmony. In a nutshell, A Synergy of Light, Material, and Collaboration redefines the workspace by championing the concept of community above all else, which in turn boosts the output of productivity—it’s a workspace that doesn’t just support work; it supports people.
