The winners for this year’s Designer of the Year Awards, commonly recognised as DOTY, are among Malaysia’s finest designers. In honouring and celebrating their work as leading visionaries, the platform has become the benchmark of excellence in the Malaysian and international design scene. A QUIET PLACE MALAYSIA

NOSTALGIC SYMPHONY | MODERN CONTEMPORARY MEETS RETRO 70S AT THIS SENSORY IMMERSIVE MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE, HARMONISING EARTHY HUES AND MINIMALIST DESIGNS FOR A SPIRITED TUNE LIKE NO OTHER.

Playfully ironic in its name, A Quiet Place is anything but. Jumping to the far end of the spectrum, Bukit Bintang’s latest hotspot invites music enthusiasts and karaoke aficionados to revel in an immersive one-stop entertainment experience that melds the nostalgic past with the decadent present. A minimalist but luxurious rendition of the Modern Contemporary concept spans the entire space, all while channelling the carefree vibes of the 70s through Madness Studio’s selection of warm earthy hues and old school furniture, ultimately exuding a sophisticated kind of retro glamour. The entertainment centre is divided into three zones, each with its own signature design elements and colour combinations to suit three different sound play concepts.

of the sunset ombre arches that highlight the white desks for a vibrant contrast; shades of yellow and orange — mustard to tangerine — are seen here, including the furniture which features the iconic Egg swivel chair. Another seating area takes inspiration from a Japanese Zen garden, featuring a metal grill hung with neon lights and plenty of handwritten notes for a more personal touch. Bathed in plenty of sunlight, the area finds itself further illuminated by the soft glow from two of the several giant spotlights placed all throughout the centre. The final touch here is the wall surrounding the entrance door, adorned with striking red cord stripes.

Classy yet edgy, the Loud Speaker 2.0 rooms are set to get visitors pumped and ready to start their own mini concert with five types of rooms ranging from small to big — Audition, Cabaret, Symphony, Opera and Festival. Walls are kept an elegant splash of grey to match the marble tabletops, but LED lights and vibrant suede furniture play a huge role in changing the colour of the whole room to either orange, green, red or blue. For the last two types of rooms which happen to be the largest, giant visual screens with abstract patterns dominate the walls for a truly entrancing experience.

Get transported to an old-timey Shanghai film at GēTái (歌台), an enormous open mic karaoke bar with a red carpet stage, embodying an opulent fusion of old oriental and modern glam. Possibly standing out as the most distinct among the concepts, its design is strongly influenced by its name which literally translates to “song stage” in the Chinese language. Exposed black beams, minimalist Chinese lanterns, aubergine walls, various soda orange seating arrangements — bar stools, dining chairs and couches — as well as brown marble tabletops define this lavish space.

Feminine and ethereal, the walkway outside the rooms where a breakfast bar is stationed takes on a completely new aesthetic. It’s a breath of fresh air thanks to the skilful combination of the copper blush textured paint, curtain-like ceiling decor and dried floral arrangements. As for the recording artist-inspired Mini Studio section entered through the archway tunnel, its carved signage continues the nature motif with a small green wall. All three types of rooms — duet, band and choir — are entered through doors that are made with the familiar ombre material seen earlier. Next to this lies the final part of the layout: the food and beverage station, exuding a modern diner feel with its burnt orange colour scheme, circular pattern and sleek metal finish.

Different in notes but harmonious in symphony, A Quiet Place exemplifies a spirited but soothing medley of eras, cultures and styles.

KAPTEN BATIK LIFESTYLE STORE, GURNEY PARAGON

TEXTILE ELEGANCE | THE MAGIC OF MODERN SOPHISTICATION ENTWINED WITH TRADITIONAL CHARM TRANSPORTS YOU TO A WORLD WHERE THE PAST MEETS THE PRESENT, AND EVERY PIECE TELLS A STORY OF TIMELESS ELEGANCE AND CONTEMPORARY ALLURE. FROM INTRICATELY DESIGNED GARMENTS TO METICULOUSLY HANDCRAFTED ACCESSORIES, IT OFFERS A SENSORY JOURNEY THROUGH THE RICH TAPESTRY OF MALAYSIAN CULTURE.

Nestled within the historic confines of Penang’s Gurney Paragon lies a haven where artistry intertwines with heritage – the captivating emporium known as Kapten Batik. Here, interior design and fashion design meet in the best way possible.

The entrance is kept subtle, comprising a pivoting door that stands out against the wooden cladding facade. But upon crossing the threshold of this stylish sanctuary designed by award-winning design studio Matthew Lim Associates, one is enveloped by an atmosphere brimming with palpable creativity. Wooden marvels, bamboo embellishments, and rattan pendant luminaries grace the expanse of this boutique, crafting an ambiance that seamlessly merges rustic allure with refined elegance. It’s a harmonious fusion of the avantgarde and the classical, where echoes of yesteryears resonate in the present moment.

Here, the synthesis of tradition and contemporary flair materializes into an enchanting opus: the “Batik Tree” sculpture, a collaborative marvel between Kapten Batik and the visionary artisan, Pamela Tan from Poh Sin Studio. This remarkable steel centrepiece helps set the tone for the 1,488 sq ft lot that revolves around urban luxury that’s localized and one of a kind.

What really makes this store a well-balanced one, though, is the surrounding design that serves to highlight the unique art piece. The cool steel tree is warmed up by the lush green foliage, which matches exceedingly well with the crafted wooden and rattan furniture. Warmth is also added through illumination provided by the built-in strip lights used throughout the location. The designers kept in mind the design narrative as well, and used matching steel elements in the pipe-like floating racks, adding a touch of industrial chicness that dynamically contrasts against the lux and tropical vibe of the store.

The store is kept airy with a lot of open shelves and seethrough light fixtures. This concept can be found in the fitting room, too, where artificial daylight streams through for patrons to view their outfits in the best light. Another thing of note in the fitting room are is the unique outdoor-esque flooring. There’s also a lot of plush and seating throughout this boutique to ensure a leisurely and inviting ambiance.

Ultimately, the key offering in a boutique is the clothes, so the designer must keep in mind how to elevate the gorgeous garments being displayed. Matthew Lim Associates did this by keeping the walls quiet to allow the bold batik clothing to stand out, yet still adding some visual texture to ensure it’s not sterile. For example, the wooden feature wall has some grain, while the concrete also has natural colouration to make it more appealing to the eye.

In this sanctuary of style, Kapten Batik extends a heartfelt invitation to rediscover the elation of retail therapy, to immerse oneself in the resplendence of Malaysian textiles, and to exalt in the rich heritage that has indelibly shaped the nation’s identity.

The first encounter with Bella Clinic Iconic is truly a multisensory delight. Stepping through the cave-inspired entrance, adorned with a strategically placed glass block, provides a mesmerising preview of the clinic’s essence. This design choice serves as an enchanting prelude to the unfolding experience, setting the stage for a journey that goes beyond the ordinary. The combination of indoor greenery, rustic tree stumps, and marble-laminate doors against cream walls creates a visual symphony, radiating a warmth that beckons visitors into an oasis of tranquillity, cocooned from the outside world.

A distinctive feature that immediately captures attention is the use of Decite stone for both the entrance wall and the front desk. This material seamlessly merges with glass, resulting in a harmonious fusion of natural and modern elements. The block wall indents, thoughtfully filled with lush indoor greenery, serve to amplify the connection between the interior space and the natural world, creating a seamless transition. The pebble-washed design adorning the wall, accompanied by strategically placed spotlights leading to the pantry, adds an extra layer of sophistication, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

As you venture further into the clinic’s interior, the meticulous use of built-in, white-painted cement blocks as chairs contributes significantly to the overall minimalistic aesthetic. Each door, crafted with compressed wood and featuring a distinctive vertical texture, emanates a Zen-like ambiance, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity throughout. Circular wall lights, minimalist in design yet powerful in effect, offer ample illumination, ensuring a serene ambiance in every corner of the space. The consultation rooms
seamlessly open into Zen-inspired areas, complete with pebblewashed surfaces, indoor greenery, and elegant marble-laminate
elements, providing a harmonious and calming environment.

Even the outdoor wash basin and bathroom areas, often overlooked in design narratives, receive special attention at Bella Clinic Iconic. Transparent cement and free-form mirrors are employed to amplify the sense of space, creating an environment that is both bright and airy. The continuity is masterfully maintained through the use of consistent marble laminate and cement countertops, ensuring a seamless design flow that effortlessly connects these spaces with the rest of the clinic.

Step into the world of Eglaf Clothing, where raw materials take center stage, crafting a unique and captivating shopping experience from the very first step. Ascending the grand staircase, one is met with a striking display of industrial elegance – raw cement underfoot, contrasting with the sleek polish of metal railings. Nature’s essence is artfully woven into the fabric of the space, with a vibrant wall adorned by inspiring artwork, bathed in the warm glow of multiple beam lights.

As customers cross the Zebra Crossing, they are ushered into the heart of the shop – a space designed to celebrate raw cement’s versatility. Here, stacks of bricks serve as imaginative showcases for Eglaf’s standout t-shirts and eclectic Bearbrick pieces. Nature makes yet another appearance, with a carefully placed plant in the center, infusing an organic touch into this modern concrete haven.

Following the painted dividers, customers are led on a journey through Eglaf’s exquisite collection, elegantly displayed on polished metal racks suspended by chains. The magic of apposition is evident as they encounter three chic seats perched atop a captivating metal cage. A brilliant showcase of creativity, it demonstrates how diverse materials and elements can seamlessly come together to form a unique furniture masterpiece.

As visitors gather around the television area, a spectacle of LED lights forms a captivating feature wall in shades of blue and black. This intelligent design serves to differentiate and emphasize promotions, effectively drawing attention to the exciting array of products within the sea of grey. The cashier counter, a testament to the beauty of raw cement, stands proudly amidst its surroundings of polished white walls and large mirrors. The result is an amplification of space, evoking a sense of openness and freedom in this delightful retail environment.

Venturing further, the space transforms into an oasis of creativity and discussion. Here, two black-framed glass structures serve as elegant partitions, delineating the area while encouraging engagement. Brick counters blend harmoniously with the charming rattan furniture, each piece with a distinct character. Adding to the allure, a fascinating wall of alphabets is illuminated by spotlights, creating an enchanting play of light and shadow, making the letters “EGLAF” pop and come alive.

Nature’s Embrace in Somore City Junction is a veritable architectural masterpiece unfolds. This symphony of tranquility and restoration, resonating in the carefully curated spaces that define the essence of this botanical sanctuary. The reception area, a prelude to the sensory journey, immerses visitors in a poetic ode to nature’s embrace.

The entrance hall, reminiscent of a golden wheat field, beckons with a meticulous interplay of textures and tones. Dried wheat decor, meticulously placed, creates a dynamic visual tapestry. Earthy-toned walls, reminiscent of sun-kissed wheat fields, envelop the space, creating a subtle yet profound connection with the outdoors. Soft, natural lighting, akin to the gentle caress of sunlight on a summer afternoon, further enhances the calming atmosphere.

The reception desk, a focal point of organic design, showcases the nuanced undulations of a wheat field. Its surfaces, adorned with a halo light, emulate the gentle sway of wheat stalks in the wind. Underfoot, natural stone tiles simulate the yielding ground, engaging guests in a tactile experience that mirrors the embrace of nature. This reception space is not merely a functional area but an immersive tableau, inviting patrons to pause and appreciate the fine artistry within.

A commanding curved glass wall, standing proudly before the waiting and treatment areas, becomes a luminous crescendo in this architectural composition. Natural light, filtered through the glass, creates an enchanting interplay of shadows on muted tones and dried plants, weaving an ephemeral dance between the interior and the exterior. Within this transparent enclosure lies a semi-private consultation room, cocooned in coziness without succumbing to claustrophobia.

The deployment of bubble windows within the architectural framework allows for subtle glimpses into the treatment rooms, artfully teasing without compromising privacy. Inside the spacious hair treatment room, a consummate commitment to design excellence envelops guests in tranquility. Pastel shades, carefully chosen to induce relaxation, dominate the walls and curtain partitions, setting the stage for a sensory journey.

Specially designed hair care stations, adorned with preserved flowers, extend the visual connection to nature, creating a harmonious blend between the interior and the botanical sanctuary outside. SUCCINCT SERENITY | CRAFTED BY THE ESTEEMED TEAM AT ADDY DESIGN CONSULTANT SDN BHD (ADC), M RESORT EMBODIES THE ESSENCE OF A LUXURIOUS SPA AND WELLNESS RETREAT, SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATING NATURE-INSPIRED ELEMENTS WITH CONTEMPORARY DESIGN.

M Resort, a visionary spa and wellness resort that redefines urban luxury, was born from a desire to create a resort-like experience within a bustling cityscape. Situated amidst the vibrant energy of Bukit Kiara, a stone’s throw away from the Kuala Lumpur city centre, this sanctuary offers a unique blend of sophistication and natural beauty, a testament to innovative design and meticulous attention to detail.

Designed by the meticulous team at Addy Design Consultant Sdn Bhd (ADC), M Resort comprises four main buildings and an individual structure, welcoming guests with a grand lobby that exudes warmth and elegance. Here, the design focus was on bringing in natural light, a key element requested by the nature loving clients, illuminated by a luxury skylight and enveloped in dark wood tones that bathes the space in a welcoming glow. In the evening, as daylight fades, the space is illuminated with subtle, yet captivating lights embedded in the feature ceiling. These lights, reminiscent of stars in a clear night sky, add a gentle and enchanting ambiance to the surroundings.

At the reception counters, the marble selection features hues of green, carefully curated to complement the overall design. The marble flooring was meticulously selected during fabrication and showcases wavy veins and soft whites, adding a touch of elegance and depth to the space. Adjacent to the concierge counter, two sculptures resembling dried leaves adorn the wall, adding a subtle yet meaningful element to the space’s narrative.

Moving through the lobby, guests encounter a stunning pool area surrounded by lush landscaping, creating a serene oasis amidst the urban jungle. Adjacent to the pool is a stylish pool bar, offering refreshing drinks, offering refreshing libations in a serene alfresco setting.

The hotel block features a boardroom, an executive lounge named M Lounge and an All-Day Dining area that tells a captivating story through its design elements. Tree branches elegantly ascend towards the ceiling, concealing exposed M&E services. The layout ensures buffet counters are well appointed, with ample space for chefs and guests. The area is cleverly sectioned, offering the flexibility to host private events when desired.

Ascending to the rooms, M Resort offers three types of accommodations: superior, deluxe, and suite rooms. The superior rooms feature Royal Blue accents and a consistent wood finish, while the deluxe rooms boast a more feminine Salmon Pink palette, highlighting the resort’s versatility in design. The suite rooms, designed for families, offer spacious living areas and stunning views, with thoughtful touches like a pantry and a cosy seating area.

Due to the limited space, the team added a full glass mirror in the bathroom, framed in metal and glass, which is thinner than traditional brick walls. This choice not only creates the illusion of a larger room but also enhances the visual spaciousness. The team also worked to infuse character into the small unit, embracing a bold design choice by using black subway tiles for the walls and a signature dark wood for panelling. The inclusion of a softly illuminated round mirror adds a touch of warmth to the space, counterbalancing the presence of hard finishes.

The facilities block is the epitome of leisure and convenience, offering a fully-equipped gym with a serene yoga room, as well as a supervised kiddies club where parents can entrust their children while enjoying their personal time. Furthermore, guests can indulge in the luxury of separate male and female changing rooms, ensuring a seamless transition after a refreshing pool session.

The block also houses 8 elegantly appointed function rooms, each meticulously named after renowned districts and towns starting with Bukit, as a nod to the location. These rooms exude sophistication with a harmonious grey palette, adorned with intricate design elements that add a touch of opulence.

Stepping into the grand ballroom reveals a space designed for versatility and grandeur. Featuring a spacious back entrance, the ballroom is capable of hosting 100 tables, accommodating up to 1,000 guests with ease. The ballroom’s operable wall allows for flexible room configurations, offering the possibility of splitting the space into two separate ballrooms as needed. A magnificent feature pendant illuminates the soaring ceiling, while reflective stainless steel accents create a captivating visual contrast. The use of luxurious grey tone fabric complements the gold stainless steel and dark walnut accents, ensuring the space feels elegant yet inviting. With customizable lighting options, operators can create the perfect ambiance for any event, adding an extra layer of sophistication to the ballroom’s allure.

DENTAL OASIS | BY EMBRACING THE PRINCIPLES OF MINIMALIST ZEN AND FINDING INSPIRATION IN THE GRACEFUL FLOW OF RIVERS, THIS DENTAL CLINIC OFFERS A UNIQUE AND SOOTHING EXPERIENCE FOR PATIENTS. This Minimalist Zen interior design, captivates by the hypnotic movement of rivers, seek to harness this concept to create an innovative and calming environment for patients, eliminating harsh lines and sharp angles in favour of gentle, fluid forms.

The clinic’s exterior facade is predominantly in grey and white, contrasting beautifully with the surrounding blue and green scenery while setting itself apart from neighbouring structures. At the entrance, wood panels and a Travertino Marble stone counter create an inviting ambiance, complemented by built-in upholstered seating for added comfort. The seamless integration of wooden panels throughout the walls, doors, and cabinets visually expands the space, enhancing the clinic’s overall spaciousness.

Throughout the dental clinic, architectural elements inspired by the river’s flow are seamlessly integrated. Curved walls, smooth surfaces, and flowing lines emulate the gentle movements of water, creating an environment that feels natural and harmonious. From the reception counter to the partitions and ceiling, organic shapes and forms replace rigid structures, evoking a sense of tranquility and connection with the natural world.

Understanding the profound impact of natural light on well-being, the clinic maximizes the use of full-height window facades, inviting an abundance of sunlight to illuminate the space. Large bronze mirrors on the walls further amplify the natural light, creating a more sophisticated and luxurious atmosphere while reinforcing the sense of calmness associated with the river’s flow.

Incorporating materials and textures that mimic the tactile qualities of nature enhances the river flow concept. Spray tiles textured
walls and counters reminiscent of rippling water add depth and visual interest to the space, while mirrors create the illusion of transparency, mirroring the clarity of flowing water. Smooth, polished marble surfaces reflect light and contribute to a sense of openness and lightness. Wood panelling adds a touch of organic charm, fostering a connection with the natural world and helping
patients feel more at ease during their visit.

Transformed by the graceful movements of a flowing river, the dental clinic becomes a space that inspires calmness and serenity. Fluid lines, soothing colours, water-inspired textures, and natural elements combine to create a more pleasant and relaxing environment, fostering a sense of balance that benefits both patients and staff alike.

Inside the surgery room, the design remains sparse and focused on the treatment area, featuring Orthodontic and Consulting chairs in black and white. Even the ultrasound machine adheres to the black and white colour scheme, ensuring a cohesive look that aligns with the clinic’s overarching aesthetic.
