Playfulness is presented in the form of a functioning skate bowl at Supreme’s Miami Design District outpost.

KEY FEATURES

Retail design agency Brinkworth, longtime collaborators of Supreme, along with architect Neil Logan and the Wilson Brothers, are behind the streetwear brand’s Miami store. Located in the city’s design district, the store builds on the successful outfits of previous stores while remaining in dialogue with the locale. The two-storey concrete-frame building is stripped to its essential shell, including the removal of internal concrete staircases. The façade is adorned with perforated panels, specifically designed to diffuse direct sunlight and create a dramatic lighting effect at night.

Inside, the store’s main feature is a suspended, functioning wooden skate bowl, realized by Simparch. Set between two concrete columns, retail elements like display racks and shelving are dispersed throughout, forming an immersive setting for browsing Supreme’s limited drops and novel items. The bowl is framed by a video wall showing skate footage. Further drawing on Supreme’s skate roots and a nod to Miami’s local culture, a precast concrete bench inspired by the city’s Martin Luther King skate spot was designed. Commissioned artworks include a site-specific piece by Dave X and a mural by Rita Ackerman.

FRAME’S TAKE

Play is a powerful design tool. In fact, FRAME’s most recent issue, FRAME 161, is dedicated to how it is an asset in a designer’s repertoire and is being used across spatial typologies and sectors to cultivate purpose, expression and optimism. One sector that is already a beneficiary of play as a design tactic is retail. ‘Retailers are recognizing that play is more than a form of entertainment, contributing editor Robert Thiemann writes. ‘It’s a way to foster emotional connections, encourage creativity and build community.’

Supreme’s use of an in-store skate bowl, an element it has previously deployed in other stores, embodies this notion of play as a pathway to meaningful engagement. With successful brands ‘focusing on participation rather than passive consumption’, the Miami Design District store cultivates an interactive experience that goes beyond mere transaction. It’s an approach that especially makes sense given the Supreme’s skate culture roots and the overall playful tone of its products and market presence.
