Dining with Diving Works of Art

Jumping off the success from their previous collaboration, Smeg reunites with Dolce & Gabbana to create exceptionally made kitchen sets and fridges that look worthy of belonging in an illustrious art museum. Considering the kitchen is unquestionably the beating heart of the home, it should stand to reason that the entire space be injected with a sense of vibrancy in terms of energy and hue. Under the authentically driven ‘Made in Italy’ project comes the ‘Sicily is my Love’ collection by Smeg x Dolce & Gabbana; the luxury home appliance manufacturer and iconic fashion label tap into their shared Italian roots to not only celebrate the colourful heritage of the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea but also convert the common perception of home appliances from mere necessity to exquisite works of art.

Under the latest instalment of the series aptly titled ‘Divina Cucina’, translated to ‘Divine Kitchen’, comes a couple of distinct but matching freestanding kitchen sets with coordinated Fab28 fridges. While the lasting quality of both remains the same, the only difference lies in the variation of flamboyant illustrations and striking colours offered. Inspired by Sicily’s rich history, nature, culture and cuisine, the two variants available are known as Carretto and Maiolica.

Regarding the former, marvel at the vivid visuals of fresh produces such as golden lemons, prickly pears and bright red cherries; delicate florals inspired by the vegetation and landscapes of Southern Italy; Sicilian puppet theatre; traditional hand-painted carts; as well as triangular geometric shapes, known as crocchi. The dominant tones seen here are fiery reds and punch oranges. On the other hand, the latter celebrates the maiolica (tin-glazed earthenware) of Caltagirone in shades of cerulean blue and pearl white by showcasing images of Mount Etna; picturesque ruins of the Greek temple of Castor and Pollux in the Valley of the Temples; together with depictions immersed in mythology and the chivalric tradition.

Diving into the nitty gritty details, the Victoriastyle set includes a black enamelled gas hob stove with a thermo-ventilated main oven, cast iron pan stands, catalytic cleaning system and 8 stainless steel controls. Although sold separately, it pairs with a grade A energy efficient decorative wall hood, made from brushed steel, that has a chimney attached, LED lights, stainless steel anti-grease filters and non-return valve. To complete the kitchen area is the 50’s style freestanding refrigerator with adjustable glass shelves and a glossy finish.

Feel free to complement the rest of your kitchen with their earlier collaborative launch of small electrical essentials such as toasters, espresso coffee machines, kettles, blenders, stand mixers, citrus juicers and slow juicers which match the same vivacious design theme. It is important to note that all these fine products are made on an industrial scale through a process of reproducing the artistic decoration on the basis of the original prototype, painted by the masterful hands of Sicilian artistscraftsmen. Overall, it is fair to say that these uniquely eye-catching imagery are not for the faint of heart, but rather the daring, artistic or even eccentric homeowners who take pleasure in unconventional extravagance accompanied by durable functionality.
