Modern minimalism with a touch of nature-inspired zen elements makes Fitokio the obvious winner in one of Kuala Lumpur’s trendiest fitness clubs.

A walkthrough to this aesthetically-pleasing fitness studio in the heart of Bangsar and you’ll be quickly mesmerised by the whole place. Inspired by the contemporary Japanese style, Fitokio by Tokyo Athletic Club went through a major makeover through efforts of Dot Works, an interior designing firm based in Kuala Lumpur.

The polished black granite marble tiles at the entrance along with the dark grey stone counter is the only area in the entire studio with a darker element, whereas the rest are in neutral tones. Gently curved in the background is an artificial but delicate white blossom tree, and a representation of bamboo trees that use strips of dark wood embossed on the textured beige wall.

The minimalist Zen approach sparks joy – both figuratively and literally. An ambience created using light brown solid wood flooring, warm wood panels on dark textured wall and textured white paint, represent an appreciation to the Zen philosophy. Using a modern ‘sudare’, the space is separated into two.

The first is a comfortable lounging area that cocoons itself with friendly furniture – plush white cushions on birch wood seats. Wall panels here continue to use ‘sudare’ elements, while a large white marble counter top acts as the pantry. On the other side of the ‘sudare’, a physical fitness area basks in natural light, imitating an outdoor workout experience.

Edging nearer to the handcrafted rocky textured wall are traditional Japanese fitness equipment made from high quality wood – showing class and poise. The modern equipment is separated by wall panels framed with wood strips and energy-efficient LED lighting. In line with the theme, the consultation rooms continue the minimalist Zen décor where it keeps to a neutral tone palette of browns and beige.

Fitokio’s centre area is an enigmatic lane of black stone tiles, dark grey wall and deep brown wood panel flooring, mirroring that of a forest with mysterious caves. Illuminating the area, electric lanterns on white rocks are the only source of light here. It leads the way to a majestic and powerful antechamber.

The play of Wagoya arches in textured grey walls creates a 3-dimensional visual that widens the narrow corridor. A modern round wall sculpture completes the look, taking the washroom experience to a whole other level. Within, the clients enjoy an artificial outdoor shower experience – textured grey shower-piece feature, dark brown walls and rock-like floor tiles that are softened by real greenery. The locker room however, is balanced with basic white and a “hanging garden” by the ceiling – exuding a clutter-free look.

Moving on, the dance, yoga and meditation section radiates a modern minimalist vibe. The dark ambience also gives off an industrial feel, and is made interesting by its lighting. A mix of horizontal pink neon lights on the ceiling leads the eye towards the hidden circular lights on the mirrors, a row of white rocks, and not forgetting the hand-sculpted stone décor too. Nature-inspired décor and interiors will always make it easy for the eyes, which helps to then transform the mind, body and soul.
